The Making of Eco-Polo

The Making of Eco-Polo

Since the rise of fast fashion, the fashion industry has contributed to a significant amount of waste each year. According to UN Environmental Programme, the fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water resources. It is responsible for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions. However, clothing production does not have to be harmful.

Presenting to you products made from waste to fashionwear, Banyan Tree Essentials is launching the Eco-Polo Collection. Every polo shirt is sustainably produced from recycled or eco-friendly materials. For this collection, we have handpicked 4 featuring materials: Recycled Oyster Shell, S.Cafe Coffee Ground, Mint and Lotus Leaf fibres. Recycled and sustainable fabrics, with the advancement of technology, is high in quality and long-lasting.

Polo Reborn - Oyster Shell: Every year, 6-8 million tonnes of oyster shells are discarded into the ocean. This has created a significant strain the marine ecosystem. Creating textile fibres from oyster shell waste is one of the ways in which we can help to alleviate its impact on our oceans. To produce this polo, oyster shells are collected, pulverised into fine a powder, and moulded into pellets to be melted and strung into quality yarn, creating soft, breathable, and flexible fabric material. Aside from that, oyster shell polos also offer benefits to the wearer such as high absorbency and deodorising effect, ideal for a day outdoors.

Polo Reborn - Coffee Ground: Coffee is a significant part of our daily routines. For this reason, coffee grounds are one of the most prevalent waste products, averaging 23 million tonnes annually. This polo is created using the S.Cafe textile material. It is produced using recycled coffee grounds to reduce and transform coffee waste into a high-quality clothing item. By extracting oil and water from the coffee grounds to create S.Cafe yarn, coffee waste is reduced and transformed into a high-quality, high-performing clothing staple. Coffee offers exceptional odor control, moisture-wicking and anti-UV properties for daily wear with ease.

Polo Wellness - Lotus: Regarded as one of the most sustainable materials for fabric creation, Lotus is not only eco-friendly but also features a range of unique properties. Spun from fine fibres of the lotus stem, this fabric material is texturally akin to silk and offers high breathability for the wearer. Created using lotus fabric, specially wrapped in a helical structure with added amino acids, this lightweight polo is ideal for daily wear and comfort.

Polo Wellness - Mint: Naturally derived from mint , this type of fabric material is highly durable and features distinctive properties from the cooling mint. To produce this polo, mint fibres are extracted from the stems of the plant, prepared using a fibrous pulp, then carefully wefted and spun to create fine, premium textile. Mint fabric offers benefits to the wearer such as a natural cooling feeling and anti-microbial properties – qualities that are inherent to the plant.

Polo Wellness - Bamboo Charcoal: Created by drying and heating the fibrous pulp of bamboo to create charcoal, the making of bamboo charcoal fibre is incredibly tedious and refined. Its fabric benefits are considerable, featuring odour and moisture absorption, textural softness and static reduction

The materials we have chosen to use for our Eco-Polo Collection do not only help to reduce the negative environmental impact from our daily waste, but also offers high durability and a variety of health-friendly benefits for the consumer. Designed mindfully and minimalistically, the Eco-Polo is the classic everyday staple. From waste to fashion wear, it is good for you and good for the environment.
